Windows 98 comes all of the necessary components you will need to get connected to CU Online. Below are detailed instructions and screenshots to help you get connected. These instructions are also useful in checking your current setup to make sure you've got everything installed properly.

Those of you switching to CU Online from another provider can use the below instructions to utilize your existing software and get connected immediately.

If you have any questions, please email support@cuol.net or give us a call at KC 816.527.0475 or Dallas 972.484.2500.

Requirements:

  • Windows 98 installed on your system
  • The Windows 98 installation CD.
  • An account with CU Online.
    • Your account userid and password
    • Our phone number - the number your chose from the list

STEP ONE
Verifying Dial Up Networking and TCP/IP is installed

First we must verify that Dial Up Networking is installed. Go to Control Panel, then double click on the Add/Remove programs icon.

Click on the Windows Setup Tab as shown below. Next, double click the Communications entry.

Check the Dial Up Networking Box (if its already checked, and you have TCP/IP installed, skip to step 2) and click OK at the bottom.

Click OK at the bottom, then OK again to exit the Add/Remove Programs box. Windows98 will now copy files from your CD or diskettes. Once all files are copied, it will prompt you to reboot. Do so.

Once your rebooted, go to Control Panel, then double click the Network icon. You will see something similar to the screen below.

Remove Client for Microsoft Networks, Client for NetWare Networks, NetBEUI, and IPX/SPX compatible protocol. These are not necessary to connect to the Internet. All you should have left is Dial Up Adapter.

Next, Click Add. Double click Protocol. Choose Microsoft, then double click TCP/IP.

You will now be presented with the following screen:

Click OK at the bottom to save your changes. You are now ready to proceed with Step Two, configuring your Dial Up Connection for CU Online.

STEP TWO
Now you are ready to set up your Dial Up Connection. Double click on the My Computer icon. Next, double click on the Dial Up Networking folder.

You will now create a new dial up entry. If you already have icons in the folder, just double click the Make New Connection icon. Name the entry "CU Online", and select the modem you'd like to use. Click Next to continue.

Enter our phone number - your chose at signup where prompted, then click Next.
Click Finish to continue.

You will now see your new CU Online Dial Up icon. Right click the icon and choose Properties.

Click on the Server Type button at the bottom. Uncheck all the boxes except Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP. Your screen should look like the one below. Click OK to exit the dialog, then OK again to save the changes.

Your setup is now complete. Double click on CU Online Dial Up icon. Fill in your username and password, and click Connect.
